Spent 7 hours today shaking hands and explaining what kind of engineering my company does at the Purdue Industrial Roundtable job fair today. I have a 3 inch thick pile of resumes in my backpack. So tired. Did get to see Bandit and that was cool.
I love the job fairs and it is always fun to see the eager students. It is also fun to be reminded what it is like to be a student and to not know how the world works.

Will you put some nice tobacco in the resumes before you burn them?

Ah, childlike ignorance. I remember what it was like to be a student four months ago and not know how the world works. Crazy how quickly time flies and things change.

Hired a freelancer fresh out of college. Sometimes I forget that that was me, once upon a time. I launched right into what I wanted her to do for her first assignment, using the lingo of my industry, which is journalism. Her degree is in this industry and she had student work experience in it prior to graduating.
We went on, back and forth for about five minutes before I asked her if she had any other questions. She responds with, “ok, so how would you do it exactly?”
There are different kinds of stories reporters write. Usually all you have to say is “this is a feature,” or “this is a city hall story” or “this is community interest” or the like and that lets you know exactly the type of story it needs to be, the tone you can use, and the level of formality of the writing. I figured, with her background, those terms would be part of her working vernacular. They weren't. No problem, I love explaining things to people, so our chat continued for another 5-10 minutes or so. She turned in her first piece and it was pretty good for a first timer. :) She just needed to have someone have confidence in her. I'd forgotten what that kind of trepidation at a new situation felt like. I'd become so used to navigating in this world like I own the place, heh. It was a good reminder that not everyone inhabits this same space.

Perhaps. We picked up a few folks who bailed out of United. We even opened a satellite office in SFO.
We kind of like folks out of school as they don't have too many bad habits.

Hey, we have a spring coop spot open in our Enabling Texhnologies group. That's the materials group I told you about. Most the spot is focused on failure analysis. Right next the current coop is looking at carbon brakes. Any interest?

For spring 2017 or spring 2018? Because that sounds really interesting.

17. Wow, my use of English in my previous post sucked.
I have your resume, but it is in the pile. If you click on my screen name above it goes to my kinja page. My name is at the top. Put dots between first and last and the company email at the end and shoot me your resume and I will get into the right hands.

I’ll let you know later tomorrow if I can make that work. I’d have to quit my RA job and I need to figure out what that entails.

Ok. Hopefully they would work with you with an opportunity like this.
